Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a unique technique that uses photosensitizers, light and oxygen to kill various pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites.

When photosensitizers are exposed to a specific wavelength of light, they produce active oxygen radicals that can destroy targeted cells. Each photosensitizer is activated by light of a specific wavelength.  This wavelength determines how far the light can travel into the body. These photosensitizers are very specific in binding targeted malignant or other diseased or infectious cells within the body. A photosensitizer is typically administered into the bloodstream intravenously and absorbed by cells all over the body, residing in unhealthy or abnormal cells longer.

Treatment time and number of recommended treatments vary. In most cases, PDT treatment sessions take anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes.

PDT is used to treat a wide range of medical issues:

  • Viral/bacterial/parasitic infections

  • Cancer

  • Chronic pain

  • Cardiovascular diseases

  • Neurodegenerative diseases

  • Depression/anxiety

  • Allergies

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Lyme disease

  • Sports performance
